What do the Local Election Results mean for Erewash in the Upcoming General Election
In the recent local election results in England the Liberal Democrats were the second largest party surpassing the Conservatives. It is a distinct possibility that could be replicated on a national scale as we are polling extremely well against the Conservatives in up to 100 seats they currently hold.
In Derbyshire we polled well in the Police and Crime Commissioner election, and less well in the East Midlands Mayoralty election. However, in the General Election, according to last times’ result, Erewash* is a Conservative-Labour contest and the polls suggest it won’t be a contest with Labour odds on to win it easily. With the Labour party moving more and more into the Conservatives space on the centre right it is important that the Liberal Democrats get as many votes as possible in the upcoming general election. Not so much for this election, our broken electoral system means that in this election a vote for the Liberal Democrats in Erewash will be unlikely to return a Liberal Democrat MP, but for the next parliament where the party that comes second will be best placed to hold the probable Labour government to account and get them to deliver for the people of this country rather than following the previous governments path of not delivering. And at the next election where the party in that achieves second place this time round will be best placed to return an MP who can deliver for the country and for Erewash. That must be a Liberal Democrat as the alternatives (a return to the failed Conservatives or a switch to Reform UK – a more conservative Conservative Party) don’t bear thinking about and will not deliver for the people of Erewash and the United Kingdom.
*In Mid-Derbyshire which covers part of the Erewash Borough (West Hallam, Little Eaton, Ockbrook and Borrowash) it is much closer, and Labour have deprioritised the seat as non-Target.
