Erewash Liberal Democrats are committed to protecting our green belt in Erewash, and the surrounding areas. We believe there should be a core strategy that reflects our climate change commitments and preserves the Green Belt as a valuable resource.
The method of assessment is unfair on the North of the borough as it values higher quality farmland over hilly terrain which can often be far more valuable in terms of wildlife habitat. The process of allocating land in thirds, with a third coming from the Green Belt every ten years will lead to the gradual but inevitable loss of all of the Green Belt surrounding Ilkeston and the merging of Ilkeston with Shipley.
Lib Dem Councillor Robert Mee has voiced his opposition in the Borough Council Meetings and voted against the Core Strategy as it currently stands, but it has still gone out to consultation. At the last consultation 80% of the responses were objections to building on the Ilkeston Green Belt at Cotmanhay, these were ignored though the site was cut in half due ot one of the land owners telling the council they weren't interested.
20% of the responses at the last consultation were regarding the Sawley Lock Lane site most of those were ignored however the response from National Rail regarding the level crossing was not ignored and the site was dropped.
The new plan has gone out to consultation and includes sites at the edge of Derby which Derby City has raised concerns about, to replace the Sawley site, and still has significant development around Ilkeston.
